………Is a question we get asked a lot at Pure Air Cleaning.

How Often Should I clean The Heat Pump Filters?

The Heat Pump filters should be cleaned periodically, about once every month or two, depending on usage and air quality. These are easy to access (by opening front cover and removing) and can be done by vacuuming the lint and particles from the filters. If the filters in your heat pump need a more thorough cleaning, they can be removed and washed with warm water and a mild cleaning solution – However, if the filter is a fibre filter, water should not be used as it can degrade the filter.

How Often Should The Inside Head Unit Be Cleaned?

The standard recommendation to clean a Ductless Heat Pump System is between 12 and 18 months. However, this can vary depending on the amount of use and the amount and type of air pollution in your area. We have seen heat pumps that have been used for 2 years that still don’t require a clean (though this doesn’t happen too often!), and we’ve seen systems that are desperate for cleaning after just 3 or 4 months! This depends a=on a few factors, just click below for the easy guide….

What affects how often the heat pump needs cleaning, and what you can ! do about it?

  • Take a flashlight and look between the louvres (or air vents/grills) at the bottom of the head unit (see pic below)
  • Look into the back and at the ‘blower wheel’. This is a cylinder that runs the length of the machine and spins to distribute the air. Moisture can sit here and more often than not, it is built up with dust, dirt, gunk and often mold.
  • If your unit hasn’t been deep cleaned in over a year or more, chances are there is a lot of build up here that needs to be flushed out.
  • Take a flashlight and look in-between the grills at the bottom of the head unit. When we perform a Mini-Split Deep Clean we remove all covers, spray soak the coil, and flush all this out to a sparkling shine. See the video below!

Check The Inside Coil For Dust, Dirt & Debris

You can also open the cover to the Head Pump Unit and remove the filters.

Look at the coil (the metal unit with lots of thin blades/veins) to see if it has dust, particles or mold in-between the blades.

This will decrease the efficiency and safety/air quality of the machine.
