How Do I Know My Heat Pump Needs Cleaning?!!
3 EASY STEPS TO SPOT THE MOLD
We all know by now that an unclean heat pump can contain mold, dust and other undesirables that it can distribute within the air throughout your home.
However, one of the most common questions we get asked is “how do I know if my heat pump needs cleaning”?
Most of the time, the heat pump in your home will continue to operate by all appearances ‘normally’, however dirty they are inside. However, the unit will be operating inefficiently and could be spreading unwanted airbourne particles around your home if it is left unclean.
Here’s the Easy Checks;
1.Smell; if there is a musty or odd odour near the inside head unit of the Heat Pump, the chances are it needs a thorough cleaning
2. The Heat Pump is not heating or cooling as well as it used to, or the electricity consumption has gone up
3. And this is the ONE Simple Method;
1. Turn the unit off at the inside head unit
2.Open the grills by easing them open
3.Take a flashlight and look through the grills to the back of the unit. If it needs cleaning there will be dirt of the back panel and along the blower wheel. Take your time and let your eyes adjust.
It can be hard to see but take your time, if it hasn’t been cleaned in a while there will almost always be dirt and mold build up on the blower wheel that distributes air directly into your home.

How Often to Clean a Heat Pump?
It can be hard to tell because the unit is designed to compensate for any extra load on the system, and most of the dust, dirt and mold is inside the unit. So even when the heat pump is extremely dirty, and full of mold, it will still appear to be operating normally.
“Almost every job we arrive at, the unit looks clean from the outside”
However, the blower wheel inside is almost always full of dirt, and starting to mold or is covered in mold by the time we get to it”
This leads to unhealthy air and an extremely inefficient system”.
